Following the success of his 2017 chiller Terrified, Argentinian director Demián Rugna is back to deliver more supernatural terror. When Evil Lurks tackles the topic of demonic possession, and its premise teases a refreshing twist on the subgenre.
When Evil Lurks chronicles the strange happenings in a remote village that’s fallen prey to a demon that wants to unleash an inferno on the locals. As such, the villagers must figure out which one of them is possessed by the entity before more of its kind are born. It’s a whodunnit mystery, with demons and lots of gore. Ezequiel Rodríguez, Eduardo Salomón, and Silvia Sabater lead the cast. Check out the trailer below for a taste of what’s in store.
What’s more, this might not be the final project set in this universe. According to Deadline, AMC Studios is looking to create a TV show that expands upon the movie’s concept and lore. It remains to be seen if the planned series will come to fruition, but the fact they’re even considering it suggests that AMC’s powers that be have a lot of faith in Rugna’s latest effort.
When Evil Lurks also marks Rugna’s second collaboration with Shudder. The chiller will arrive on the streaming service on October 20, and it will be available to view in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Of course, this isn’t Rugna’s only contribution to genre cinema in 2023. He also directed a segment for the critically acclaimed Satanic Hispanics, an anthology of five short films that were written and directed by Latin filmmakers. The movie has already garnered a fair amount of controversy after attracting the attention of religious groups who haven’t taken kindly to its devilish themes, and you just can’t beat that type of free publicity. However, most horror fans who’ve seen it are of the opinion that it’s just a gory good time.
